With the Rainbow By my Side

Here, you will see my collection of typography work from 2020, from designer spotlights to type history, Gramma's tri-fold recipe, and summer camp brochures. When compiling all of my work, I wanted the book's overall theme to push me out of my comfort zone and force me to take some creative risks with the arrangement of my content and research. When I was creating this book, I distinctly remember that I was so convinced that for my work to be considered that of "industry level," I needed it to look "perfect." Unfortunately for me, such a thing does not exist. Therefore, I made it my goal to break this preconception that I had established in my mind and try out some new techniques.

While they may not be the most dare devilish of design choices, even the slight change in the rotation in the text was a huge deal for me. The reoccurrence of squares and rectangles was used as guidelines to follow their lines with the text. Circles also managed to appear on some of my spreads because I wanted to show how powerful even the most rudimentary of shapes can be in a design. I sometimes joke about this being the building block of my time with typography and InDesign.

When it came time to choose colors for my booklet, I had no trouble! I wanted this booklet to showcase who I am as a designer. Every color of the rainbow is at my disposal as a designer. What I mean is that I can create something out of nothing and share that with others. Throughout the book, the primary colors symbolize all that can be made with those three colors, similar to what geometric shapes like squares and circles do. The exterior of the booklet comprises white and plenty of negative space. The interior, however, is where all of the content is; the meat and potatoes of this project. This is how it represents me! On the outside, I may be a quiet person when you first get to know me, but I have so much inside that I cannot wait to be able to share with the world. I may not be designing spreads as industry-level designers do in popular magazines nowadays, but I am creating like my authentic self, and no one else in the world can do that!
